God commands exclusive worship and forbids idolatry. The first commandment demands undivided loyalty to Yahweh alone, not ranking Him first among many gods. The second prohibits creating images for worship, as idols distort God’s true nature and create a controllable deity. God jealously protects His honor, desiring our complete affection, trust, and obedience because He is worthy as Creator and Redeemer.
